We invented the high-shear dry extrusion process\u00a0and have sought to optimize it over the years through research\u2014much of which has been detailed here on the blog. In a previous\u00a0blog,<\/a> I discussed the advantages of using this method and how to process dry extruded soybeans, but today, I will discuss the benefits of processing ExPress\u00ae soybean meal compared to solvent-extracted soybean meal<\/span>.<\/p>\n

In the early 1990s, Insta-Pro Intl released a horizontal, mechanical oil press<\/a> to be used immediately after the extruder for crude oil isolation.\u00a0 Interestingly, this chemical-free extraction process produces oil with different, beneficial properties<\/a> when compared to solvent-extracted soy oil.<\/p>\n

The result of including the oil press after the extruder is that a unique soy meal is produced\u2014one that has highly digestible amino acids and a greater metabolizable energy content. This is due to a residual oil content of 6-8% in the meal and also because the dry extrusion process liberates more available energy<\/a>.<\/p>\n

I recently sent some ExPress\u00ae soy meal to the laboratory to determine amino acid digestibilities and metabolizable energy using broiler chickens.\u00a0 Nutritionists and formulators rely on these values when assembling diets.\u00a0 Values for samples of commodity, solvent-extracted soybean meal, which were also recently analyzed, are compared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Several things are apparent.\u00a0 Overall, ExPress\u00ae soy meal is more digestible than solvent-extracted soybean meal.\u00a0 However, it\u2019s important to remember that this is only true when extrusion is conducted at the proper temperature<\/a>.\u00a0 Quality controls, such as monitoring temperature during runs, are crucial and allow ExPress\u00ae meal to stand out from other ingredients, which are\u00a0more variable<\/a> (see Figure 3).<\/p>\n

The residual oil and processing benefits associated with ExPress\u00ae meal result in a higher metabolizable energy value \u2013 typically, this means that an additional energy source, such as AV blends or spent oils, is not required.<\/p>\n
