{"id":8568,"date":"2017-01-05T10:43:00","date_gmt":"2017-01-05T16:43:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.insta-pro.com\/en\/?p=8568"},"modified":"2026-01-07T13:30:58","modified_gmt":"2026-01-07T19:30:58","slug":"food-grade-vs-sanitary-design","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/instapro.spinuhost.com\/en\/blog\/businessstrategyandfinance\/food-grade-vs-sanitary-design\/","title":{"rendered":"Food Grade vs. Sanitary Design"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Our extruders may be best known for processing feed ingredients, but several customers are producing products for human consumption.\u00a0 These products can include things like fortified blended foods (FBFs) and textured soy proteins (TSP), among others.\u00a0 Food processing facilities will have more scrutiny regarding cleanliness and hygiene compared to feed plants and careful consideration must be made to product handling.\u00a0 One area we see a lot of question about is in regards to equipment construction and how it relates to food grade items.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Terminology<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Like many things, \u201cfood grade\u201d tends to have different meanings depending on which part of the world you live.\u00a0 What might be okay in one location may not be acceptable in another.\u00a0 There can be much confusion about what this term actually means and how it relates to equipment construction.\u00a0 This is an important distinction to remember when requesting \u201cfood grade\u201d equipment.\u00a0 Typically, a more correct term is to have a \u201csanitary\u201d design.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Design Characteristics<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sanitary designs generally have to do with how easy the equipment is to clean and how well it keeps product from piling up in gaps and holes.\u00a0 In general, the designs have the following characteristics:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Generally constructed from stainless steel (other materials can be used, however)<\/li>\n<li>All surfaces that come into contact with the product are easily accessible for cleaning and inspection<\/li>\n<li>Joints are welded instead of bolted and are ground and continuous (no gaps or holes where product can be stuck or hidden from cleaning)<\/li>\n<li>Parts are easily disassembled without tools for easy cleaning and inspection<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Standards<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Domestically and internationally, there are various committees and organizations that offer standards for food grade construction and practices.\u00a0 These are designed to be best manufacturing practices.\u00a0 These groups work in collaboration with one another to develop these, even though they may come from various industries such as meat and dairy.\u00a0 Adhering to these can allow you to differentiate your product as something superior in the marketplace.\u00a0 Below are various standards for reference:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>3A Sanitary Standards Inc.
