{"id":8528,"date":"2016-12-08T03:26:42","date_gmt":"2016-12-08T09:26:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.insta-pro.com\/en\/?p=8528"},"modified":"2026-01-07T13:30:56","modified_gmt":"2026-01-07T19:30:56","slug":"estimating-bulk-densities-of-mixed-products","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/instapro.spinuhost.com\/en\/blog\/engineeringandmaintenance\/estimating-bulk-densities-of-mixed-products\/","title":{"rendered":"Estimating Bulk Densities of Mixed Products"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>Bulk density is an important metric in many things such as bagging or conveying, which we\u2019ve written about in this past <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insta-pro.com\/en\/2014\/05\/20\/calculating-conveying-capacities\/\">blog<\/a>.\u00a0 Many websites and resources feature bulk densities of known products such as whole soybeans, ground soybeans, corn, etc, but what do you do if you\u2019re trying to determine something new?\u00a0 There are several times when you may have to decide on a mixer or bin capacity that will contain several different products with different bulk densities.\u00a0 How would you calculate this?\u00a0 With some simple math and some patience, you\u2019ll be able to determine these answers.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><strong>What You Need<\/strong><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>To start, you will need to know some existing densities of products.\u00a0 As mentioned, there are several resources that have a good range of known products.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>As an example, let\u2019s assume we have a formula with the following blend percentage for 1 ton (2000 lbs) of final product:<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0 Coarse cracked corn: 70% (1400 lbs)<\/div>\n<div>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0 Ground soybeans: 20% (400 lbs)<\/div>\n<div>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0 Cracked wheat: 10% (200 lbs)<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>From various sources, we know the following estimates:<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0 Coarse cracked corn bulk density: 40 lbs\/cubic foot<\/div>\n<div>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0 Ground soy bulk density: 35 lbs\/cubic foot<\/div>\n<div>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0 Cracked wheat bulk density: 45 lbs\/cubic foot<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><strong>How to Calculate<\/strong><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>An easy method is to multiply the bulk density by their respective percentages, then add everything together.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0 Coarse cracked corn: 70% x 40 lbs = 28 lbs<\/div>\n<div>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0 Ground soybeans: 20% x 35 lbs = 7 lbs<\/div>\n<div>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0 Cracked wheat: 10% x 45 lbs \u00a0= 4.5 lbs<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Adding these together gives an estimated bulk density for the product of 39.5 lbs\/cubic foot.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>You can do this for as many ingredients as you have by using the same methods described above and then adding the values together.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>If you are interested in an alternative method, you can do the following:<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Take the individual weight of each ingredient,<\/div>\n<div>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Determine the total volume of all ingredients, and then<\/div>\n<div>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Take the total weight divided by the volume<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>This will give a slightly different value, but the difference is negligible.
