{"id":7675,"date":"2016-04-28T07:02:10","date_gmt":"2016-04-28T12:02:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.insta-pro.com\/en\/?p=7675"},"modified":"2025-12-18T10:24:43","modified_gmt":"2025-12-18T16:24:43","slug":"hammermill-air-relief-systems","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/instapro.spinuhost.com\/en\/blog\/engineeringandmaintenance\/hammermill-air-relief-systems\/","title":{"rendered":"Hammermill Air Relief Systems"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Awhile back, in our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insta-pro.com\/en\/2012\/11\/22\/particle-size-reduction\/\">blog<\/a> about Particle Size Reduction, we discussed several particle size reduction methods.\u00a0 These included rollermills, pulverizers, and hammermills.\u00a0 Some limitations of the hammermill included making the finer grind sizes needed for smaller pellets and milling efficiency for larger capacities.\u00a0 To help achieve these goals, an air relief system can be added.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>What It Is:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>An air relief system is an addition to the hammermill that allows air to be pulled away from the mill.\u00a0 This helps product flow through the mill easier and prevents it from getting stuck in the mill. \u00a0The hammermill itself creates several thousand cubic feet per minute (CFM) of airflow during operation. This airflow helps push the product out of the mill.\u00a0 On the other hand, in larger capacities or finer grinds, this air can become trapped within the mill and hinder performance.\u00a0 The air relief system uses a fan-based system to pull this dead air away from the mill so that the mill can become more efficient.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>How the Relief System Works:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There are a few different ways to use an air relief system on a hammermill.\u00a0 The following images show three main ways:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><u>Negative product conveying:<\/u> A fan and cyclone system pull air from the hammermill discharge to convey product to the next process step.\u00a0 This helps control dust and is an efficient method of conveying product.\u00a0 This is typically seen as part of the final loadout process within a plant.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.insta-pro.com-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-7680 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.insta-pro.com-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/1.png\" alt=\"1\" width=\"506\" height=\"504\" srcset=\"https:\/\/instapro.spinuhost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/1.png 506w, https:\/\/instapro.spinuhost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/1-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/instapro.spinuhost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/1-300x300.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 506px) 100vw, 506px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><u>Air Assist w\/ Bag Filter:<\/u> The hammermill sits on top of a plenum chamber with a bag house.\u00a0 The fan pulls air from the mill through the baghouse to help draw product through the mill but to also help with dust control. All product falls into an enclosed conveyor to the next process step.\u00a0 This is a common setup for most applications.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.insta-pro.com-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-7684\" src=\"https:\/\/www.insta-pro.com-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/2.png\" alt=\"2\" width=\"484\" height=\"504\" srcset=\"https:\/\/instapro.spinuhost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/2.png 484w, https:\/\/instapro.spinuhost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/2-288x300.png 288w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 484px) 100vw, 484px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><u>Air assist w\/ cyclone separator:<\/u> A modification of the bag filter method, this setup uses a cyclone instead of a baghouse.\u00a0 This is an older design, but it is just as effective.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.insta-pro.com-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/3.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-7688\" src=\"https:\/\/www.insta-pro.com-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/3.png\" alt=\"3\" width=\"483\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/instapro.spinuhost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/3.png 483w, https:\/\/instapro.spinuhost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/3-290x300.png 290w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 483px) 100vw, 483px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Not Only For Hammermills:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Air relief systems are not limited to hammermills, either.\u00a0 They can be mounted to any size reduction application and are often recommended for the larger systems due to the increase in efficiency of the mill and dust control.
