{"id":7645,"date":"2016-04-21T03:34:41","date_gmt":"2016-04-21T08:34:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.insta-pro.com\/en\/?p=7645"},"modified":"2023-06-22T07:45:10","modified_gmt":"2023-06-22T12:45:10","slug":"rice-bran-better","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/instapro.spinuhost.com\/en\/blog\/nutritionandtechnologies\/rice-bran-better\/","title":{"rendered":"Extrusion Not Only Stabilizes Rice Bran &#8211; It Makes It Better"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In previous blogs, we\u2019ve discussed how high shear, dry extrusion from Insta-Pro Intl can be used to stabilize rice bran.<\/p>\n<p>As Mayette Ramos, Sales Director for SE Asia, wrote about this topic in her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insta-pro.com\/en\/2016\/01\/14\/rice-bran-an-invaluable-by-product\/\">blog post<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDuring the rice milling process, the enzyme in the rice bran is activated which causes a rapid degradation of oil in the rice bran into free fatty acids and glycerin.\u00a0 This affects the shelf life &amp; stability of rice bran as it becomes rancid.\u00a0 Insta-Pro technology will stabilize rice bran and prolong shelf life. Immediately after milling process rice bran must be extruded at the appropriate temperature. The high shear dry extrusion process has been proven to inactivate the enzymes thus preventing rancidity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rancidification\">Rancid<\/a> oils have terrible odors and taste characteristics.\u00a0 Often, unstabilized, degraded rice bran will be rejected and, if consumed, it may reduce animal performance.<\/p>\n<p>This\u00a0is important because rice bran contains <a href=\"http:\/\/www.feedipedia.org\/node\/750\">notable quantities of nutrients<\/a>.\u00a0 While amounts will vary, rice bran typically contains greater than 10% protein and an oil content that approaches 20%.\u00a0 So, extrusion of this valuable protein and energy can deactivate enzymes and preserve for longer-term storage.<\/p>\n<p>But, can extrusion do more than preservation?\u00a0 Can extrusion improve the feeding value of rice bran?<\/p>\n<p>We can pull from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.feedipedia.org\/node\/2884\">published data<\/a> to answer this question.\u00a0 In addition to other experiments, the researchers determined the effect of pelleting and extrusion on digestibility of various parameters in rice bran fed to broilers.\u00a0 Recall that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insta-pro.com\/en\/2015\/04\/16\/why-amino-acid-digestibility-matters\/\">digestibility<\/a> is an important measure of ingredient quality and gives information on the usefulness of nutrients to support growth performance.\u00a0 A higher digestible value (%) means that more of the nutrients in rice bran are available to support muscle protein deposition, weight gain, etc.\u00a0 The digestibility results are shown below.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.insta-pro.com-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Capture-1.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-7650\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-7650 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.insta-pro.com-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Capture-1-1024x554.png\" alt=\"Capture\" width=\"684\" height=\"370\" srcset=\"https:\/\/instapro.spinuhost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Capture-1-1024x554.png 1024w, https:\/\/instapro.spinuhost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Capture-1-300x162.png 300w, https:\/\/instapro.spinuhost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Capture-1-768x415.png 768w, https:\/\/instapro.spinuhost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Capture-1-750x405.png 750w, https:\/\/instapro.spinuhost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Capture-1-564x305.png 564w, https:\/\/instapro.spinuhost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Capture-1-940x508.png 940w, https:\/\/instapro.spinuhost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Capture-1.png 1602w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 684px) 100vw, 684px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>You can plainly see that extruded rice bran has improved digestibility.\u00a0 Given that broilers have well-defined nutrient requirements for amino acids in protein, fatty acids in oil, and energy from the ingredients in a complete diet; extruded rice bran will better help to meet these requirements when it\u2019s included as an ingredient in a complete diet.\u00a0 Also, dry matter digestibility, a measure of the digestibility of everything besides moisture was improved, which means that with extruded rice bran, less waste will be produced.<\/p>\n<p>Pelleted, fresh, and rancid rice brans all had lower digestibility values.\u00a0 It\u2019s interesting that fresh and \u201crancid\u201d produced very similar results.\u00a0 The researchers did not indicate how long the rice bran sat around to become \u201crancid\u201d and the data given in the paper (% free fatty acids) indicated that what they were calling \u201crancid\u201d was not much different than fresh rice bran. As non-extruded rice bran is stored it will continue to degrade and further reduce its digestibility performance from fresh rice bran.<\/p>\n<p>In conclusion, rice bran should be extruded to not only preserve it, but also, to enhance it.\u00a0 Considering how much rice is produced around the world, and how much animal production is expected to increase, contact us about how our process works great for stabilizing and improving rice bran.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In previous blogs, we\u2019ve discussed how high shear, dry extrusion from Insta-Pro Intl can be used to stabilize rice bran.
