href=\"https:\/\/www.insta-pro.com\/2015\/08\/06\/extruded-flaxseed-for-omega-3-fatty-acid-enriched-eggs-and-meat\/\">Insta-Pro Intl\u2013 extruded flaxseed<\/a> as a way to push conversion of more long-chain, omega-3 fatty acids with less flax.\u00a0 When flax is included in livestock diets, some of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alpha-Linolenic_acid\">\u03b1-linolenic acid<\/a> (a shorter-chain omega-3 fatty acid) is converted to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Docosahexaenoic_acid\">potent long-chain, omega-3 fatty acids<\/a> \u2013\u00a0omega-3\u2019s that produce most of the health benefits (for example, see <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/m\/pubmed\/22591891\/\">here<\/a>).\u00a0 When an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insta-pro.com\/products-services\/extruders.html\">extruder<\/a> from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insta-pro.com\">Insta-Pro Intl<\/a> was used on flax before feeding, the omega-3 fats in flax were more available to the animal for the production of long-chain, omega-3 fatty acids.\u00a0 Thus, healthier animal food products were produced.<\/p>\n<p>In the Insta-Pro Intl R&amp;D center,we have\u00a0experimented with flaxseed using extrusion combined with our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insta-pro.com\/products-services\/presses.html\">mechanical oil presses<\/a>.\u00a0 For oilseed crops with over 30% oil content, we typically recommend our Press-ExPress \u00ae process\u00a0(read more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insta-pro.com\/2014\/03\/25\/using-the-oil-press-for-different-types-of-oil-seed\/\">here<\/a>), but we have also been experimenting with improved methods.\u00a0 The purpose of the oil pressing is to remove some of the flaxseed oil, leaving behind protein-containing meal with some residual oil.\u00a0 The meal can be used as an ingredient in livestock diets and it\u00a0can be ground into a flour for human food applications \u2013 provided that it was produced in a food-grade facility.\u00a0 In our experiments, the resulting flaxseed meal contained about 40% protein and 8% oil in the meal.<\/p>\n<p>As for the isolated oil from flaxseed, it can serve as a concentrated source of \u03b1-linolenic acid for feed and food (again, assuming all appropriate rules and regulations are followed) purposes.<\/p>\n<p>One quick note on oil stability \u2013 flaxseed oil contains high levels of \u03b1-linolenic acid, which is <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alpha-Linolenic_acid#Stability_and_hydrogenation\">inherently unstable<\/a>.\u00a0 As such, precautions are often taken, including isolating the oil in temperature and light-controlled rooms, cooling the oil after isolation and having carefully-designed and controlled storage areas.\u00a0 When high-shear extrusion from Insta-Pro Intl is used, however, the lipolytic enzymes that aid in oil breakdown are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insta-pro.com\/2013\/02\/19\/is-the-stability-an-issue-in-extruded-or-extruded-expelled-oil-seed-meal-and-oil\/\">deactivated, moisture is flashed off<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/pubs.acs.org\/doi\/abs\/10.1021\/jf960735g\">naturally-occurring, stabilizing tocopherols in flax<\/a> are released.\u00a0 All of this will encourage stability in both the oil isolated from flax, and the residual oil in the flaxseed meal.\u00a0 However, it is always a good idea to have shelf-life studies conducted on anything prone to oxidation and rancidity in order to better
