Grinding <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalhogfarmer.com\/hog-health\/impact-of-ground-corn-particle-size-on-nursery-finishing-pigs\">corn<\/a>\u00a0to reduce particle size increases the surface area, which allows more activity of digestive enzymes, resulting in improved feed efficiency.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-7\">Considering the potential effects of particle size of corn on the animal response, a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nutrition.ansci.illinois.edu\/node\/2027\">trial<\/a>\u00a0was conducted at the University of Illinois to determine the effects of reducing the particle size of Hi-Gel<sup>\u2122<\/sup> Corn (high-shear dry extruded) and ground corn (non-extruded) on energy digestibility and concentrations of metabolizable energy in pigs. To accomplish it, both sources of corn were ground to three different particle sizes (300, 500, and 700 \u00b5m) and fed to nursery pigs. The digestibility of the gross energy of Hi-Gel<sup>\u2122<\/sup>\u00a0corn was <strong>6% higher<\/strong> and the metabolizable energy concentration was <strong>4% high<\/strong>er than that of ground corn (non-extruded) independently of the particle size, as observed below.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-20521\" src=\"https:\/\/www.insta-pro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/march-24-blog-4-graph-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"780\" height=\"425\" srcset=\"https:\/\/instapro.spinuhost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/march-24-blog-4-graph-1.png 780w, https:\/\/instapro.spinuhost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/march-24-blog-4-graph-1-300x163.png 300w, https:\/\/instapro.spinuhost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/march-24-blog-4-graph-1-768x418.png 768w, https:\/\/instapro.spinuhost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/march-24-blog-4-graph-1-750x409.png 750w, https:\/\/instapro.spinuhost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/march-24-blog-4-graph-1-564x307.png 564w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 780px) 100vw, 780px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-8\">Overall, results from this trial to determine how the particle size of Hi-Gel\u2122 corn affects the energy value of corn for pigs indicate that high-shear dry extrusion technology adds energy value to corn, making the highly gelatinized starch more digestible for productive purposes, regardless of particle size.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-9\">As dry extrusion increases the available energy in corn, it is possible to get more energy out of Hi-Gel<sup>\u2122<\/sup>\u00a0corn, which allows for diet cost savings.\u00a0 The economic benefits of higher metabolizable energy in Hi-Gel<sup>\u2122<\/sup>\u00a0Corn is an opportunity for swine integrators to save approximately 3.5% on feed costs for nursery pigs with less inclusion of SBM and oil in the diets.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-10\">This promising new data adds to our growing insight into extruding corn, and we are excited to continue exploring this invaluable ingredient for improving animal nutrition.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The particle size of corn and other cereal grains is a key factor to consider, given that it affects nutrient digestibility and growth performance of pigs.
