Typically, in order to build proteins, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insta-pro.com\/en\/blog\/nutritionandtechnologies\/go-beyond-the-buzzword-amino-acids\/\">all amino acids<\/a>\u00a0are needed.\u00a0 Commercial diet formulations often focus on levels of lysine and methionine, as these tend to be limiting and can impede growth and efficiency.<\/p>\n<p>However, when working on least-cost diet formulations, as I regularly do, other amino acids often come into play as well.<\/p>\n<p>There are two\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/16702333\/\">sulfur-containing amino acids<\/a> that makeup proteins \u2013 methionine and cysteine.\u00a0 The sulfur component is important because it helps proteins stick together and form 3-D structures, which give them function. While there are a myriad of functional proteins in soy, one such group is known as the antinutritional factors, which are similar to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Trypsin_inhibitor\">trypsin inhibitors<\/a>.\u00a0 Antinutritional factors serve as a natural defense mechanism for soy, making protein digestion difficult and dissuading animals from eating it.\u00a0 Therefore, heat processing like high-shear dry extrusion, which deactivates trypsin inhibitors and other antinutritional factors, is needed to make high-quality soy meals that enhance animal growth.<\/p>\n<p>It should be noted that one type of heat processing does a markedly better job of promoting the digestion of sulfur-containing amino acids than others.\u00a0 In the case of cysteine digestibility, high-shear dry extrusion is far superior to other methods (data from Dr. Carl Parsons, University of Illinois).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-14116\" src=\"https:\/\/www.insta-pro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/DaveCysteineGraph.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"468\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/instapro.spinuhost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/DaveCysteineGraph.png 468w, https:\/\/instapro.spinuhost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/DaveCysteineGraph-300x171.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 468px) 100vw, 468px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As the graph above shows, high-shear dry extrusion does something unique to free up cysteine in soy proteins.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insta-pro.com\/en\/blog\/nutritionandtechnologies\/why-amino-acid-digestibility-matters\/\">Digestibility<\/a> improvements of 5-6% percentage points for any amino acid indicate a major advantage.\u00a0 The heating processes for hexane extraction, and those achieved with expanders, produce very different results. It is much more difficult to access cysteine during digestion with these processing methods.<\/p>\n<p>Remember that cysteine is used in proteins to give 3-D structure and function and that one important group of soy proteins is the trypsin inhibitors.\u00a0 As seen\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/figure\/Primary-structure-of-soybean-Bowman-Birk-inhibitor-The-primary-structure-of-the-soybean_fig5_7861247\">here<\/a>, one soy trypsin inhibitor contains seven cysteine pairs that make the protein stick together and function, causing difficulty during protein digestion.\u00a0 Vastly improved cysteine digestibility following proper processing with high-shear dry extrusion can also indicate better antinutrient deactivation, providing a higher-quality meal.\u00a0 Additionally, feathers are rich in these amino acids, resulting in chickens having a high requirement.<\/p>\n<p>What does this mean for formulations?\u00a0 When using high-shear dry extruded soy meals in, for example, broiler formulations, anywhere from $30-62\/ton meal premiums can be realized.\u00a0 Part of this advantage is due to improvements in amino acid digestibility, including cysteine.\u00a0 If you would like to learn more about the benefits of using high-shear dry extruded soy meals, please contact us, we would love to hear from you!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Amino acids that makeup proteins are critically important in any diet.
