{"id":20237,"date":"2024-01-10T06:00:45","date_gmt":"2024-01-10T12:00:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.insta-pro.com\/?p=20237"},"modified":"2024-02-14T11:44:39","modified_gmt":"2024-02-14T17:44:39","slug":"part-1-evaluating-ingredients-in-poultry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/instapro.spinuhost.com\/en\/blog\/nutritionandtechnologies\/part-1-evaluating-ingredients-in-poultry\/","title":{"rendered":"Part 1 &#8211; Evaluating Ingredients in Poultry"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There are many choices when formulating diets for food animals.\u00a0 Understandably, least-cost formulation programs are used to quickly determine how to meet certain nutrient requirements, different for each species, stage of production, climate, and so on, in order to maximize performance as inexpensively as possible.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s important to keep in mind that least-cost formulation programs only do one thing \u2013 assemble a diet without any knowledge of what happens in the animal.\u00a0 You must have an understanding of physiology and nutrition that is used to help guide the formulation program.<\/p>\n<p>A good example of this comes from\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.foodscience-avenue.com\/2008\/04\/crude-fiber.html\">crude fiber<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 a somewhat inexact measure of the indigestible components of a diet.\u00a0 It\u2019s inexact because better measures of indigestible components now exist, such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Neutral_Detergent_Fiber\">neutral detergent fiber<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Regardless, you have to understand how certain animals digest, or more importantly, do\u00a0<em>not<\/em>\u00a0digest these components in order to evaluate ingredients.\u00a0 Remember, when using a least-cost formulation program, first and foremost, reducing the cost is the goal.\u00a0 The software knows nothing about physiology and nutrition without the guidance of a nutritionist.<\/p>\n<p>So, as an example, what happens when the crude fiber content of a poultry diet is increased?\u00a0 We can look at information from a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/ps\/article\/87\/1\/89\/1567076\">thorough research study<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-20175 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.insta-pro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/crude-Fiber-2-750x392-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"392\" srcset=\"https:\/\/instapro.spinuhost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/crude-Fiber-2-750x392-1.png 750w, https:\/\/instapro.spinuhost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/crude-Fiber-2-750x392-1-300x157.png 300w, https:\/\/instapro.spinuhost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/crude-Fiber-2-750x392-1-564x295.png 564w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As the graph indicates, poultry are not able to effectively digest increased levels of crude fiber.\u00a0 The metabolizable energy,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.insta-pro.com\/en\/2013\/06\/18\/energy-in-performance-out\/\">or that which can be used to support performance<\/a>, declines because of the structure of the gastrointestinal tract of poultry (and birds in general).\u00a0 This also happens because modern poultry breeds are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.insta-pro.com\/en\/2017\/06\/01\/strategies-for-slower-growing-broilers\/\">eating machines<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 they do not change consumption much at all with changes in nutrient composition.<\/p>\n<p>In this experiment, crude fiber levels were increased using a mixture of 3 ingredients, and these results would have been different with other ingredients.\u00a0 Further complicating all of this, ruminants, like cattle, have a gastrointestinal structure that is designed to digest high levels of fiber.\u00a0 In addition, it\u2019s likely that if the fiber-containing ingredients had been\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.insta-pro.com\/en\/2014\/01\/28\/extrusion-effects-on-fiber-challenges-and-opportunities\/\">extruded<\/a>, they would have had more metabolizable energy \u2013 so, understanding the effect of processing is critical as well.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s important to go beyond least cost when formulating diets.\u00a0 In Part 2, I will discuss other nutrient indicators and how to use them when evaluating ingredients.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There are many choices when formulating diets for food animals.\u00a0 Understandably, least-cost formulation programs are used to quickly determine how to meet certain nutrient requirements, different for each species, stage of production, climate, and so on, in order to maximize performance as inexpensively as possible.
