{"id":1537,"date":"2014-04-29T09:00:52","date_gmt":"2014-04-29T09:00:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.insta-pro.com\/?p=1537"},"modified":"2019-07-12T09:26:05","modified_gmt":"2019-07-12T14:26:05","slug":"express-the-genetic-potential-of-your-animals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/instapro.spinuhost.com\/en\/blog\/nutritionandtechnologies\/express-the-genetic-potential-of-your-animals\/","title":{"rendered":"ExPress the Genetic Potential of your Animals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There is a certain maximum achievable biological response that is specific to each individual living organism.\u00a0 This response is controlled by the genetic composition of the individual, as well as the environment within which rearing occurs.\u00a0 In nearly every case, an individual will not maximize genetic potential due to at least some negative environmental conditions \u2013 diseases, challenging atmospheric conditions outside, difficult indoor living environments, and inadequate or unbalanced nutrition.<\/p>\n<p>One of the goals of livestock producers is to maximize the genetic potential of their food-producing animals by minimizing the factors that impede the biological response \u2013 weight gain, lean muscle deposition, and others.\u00a0 Providing a diet formulated to meet the essential nutrient needs of a species and strain is a major part of animal production.\u00a0 This is an environmental factor that must be optimized for performance.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, it is important to use high-quality ingredients to supply essential nutrients.\u00a0 Quality can be defined as the total amounts of nutrients in raw materials, and amounts available after processing.\u00a0 Typically, mass-produced <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Commodity\">commodities<\/a> are available to the livestock nutritionist, along with alternatives that have demonstrated advantages over commodities.<\/p>\n<p>A good example can be found with <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Soybean\">soybeans<\/a>, which mainly provide <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insta-pro.com\/2012\/12\/19\/impact-of-extrusion-on-nutrientspart1\/\">protein<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insta-pro.com\/2013\/09\/10\/all-energy-sources-are-not-created-equal\/\">energy in the form of oil<\/a>. \u00a0Both are essential to support livestock performance.\u00a0 They also contain potent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insta-pro.com\/2014\/04\/01\/the-role-of-anti-nutritional-factors-in-seeds-legumes\/\">antinutritional factors<\/a>, which hinder digestion and performance.\u00a0 Therefore, soybeans must be heat processed.\u00a0 The commodity approach, which involves heating and hexane-extraction for oil isolation, produces solvent-extracted soybean meal.\u00a0 High-shear, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insta-pro.com\/products-services\/extruders.html\">dry extrusion<\/a> followed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insta-pro.com\/products-services\/presses.html\">mechanical oil pressing (or expelling)<\/a> to separate the oil from meal results in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.swartzag.com\/PDF\/theinstaproprocess.pdf\">ExPress\u00ae soy meal<\/a>.\u00a0 So, even though the material is the same at the beginning \u2013 soybeans \u2013 differences in processing result in different ingredients at the end.\u00a0 And therefore, the genetic potentials of animals will be expressed differently as well.<\/p>\n<p>For example, when a commercial farm switched from using commodity soybean meal plus fat, and started using ExPress\u00ae soy meal, heavier egg case weights were realized faster (1).\u00a0 This is important as larger eggs are more valuable than smaller ones.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.insta-pro.com-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/3-e1398955668338.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1538\" src=\"https:\/\/www.insta-pro.com-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/3-e1398955668338.jpg\" alt=\"3\" width=\"478\" height=\"293\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Similarly, a swine feeding trial demonstrated that ExPress\u00ae soy meal maximized growth performance when replacing commodity meal, and diets containing by-products of the ethanol industry (DDGS) and fat (2).\u00a0 Therefore, days to market could be reduced, in some cases with less feed intake, with ExPress\u00ae soy meal.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.insta-pro.com-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1539 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.insta-pro.com-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/4-e1398955639352.jpg\" alt=\"4\" width=\"500\" height=\"347\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Lastly, catfish growth was much greater with an extruded soy mix containing ExPress\u00ae soy meal compared to commodity soybean meal (3). Also, the addition of fish meal, an essential, expensive component of aquaculture diets, only slightly improved catfish performance with ExPress\u00ae soy meal.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.insta-pro.com-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/5-e1398955592609.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1540\" src=\"https:\/\/www.insta-pro.com-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/5-e1398955592609.jpg\" alt=\"5\" width=\"500\" height=\"355\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It is clear that using high-quality alternative ingredients is a simple way to express the genetic potential of livestock.\u00a0 Commodity, solvent-extracted soybean meal will limit this biological response.<\/p>\n<p><em>References:<br \/>\n<\/em>(1)\u00a0\u00a0 Data and details of commercial farm available upon request<br \/>\n2)\u00a0\u00a0 Benz et al., 2007.
