Food Made Us Human?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I recently stumbled across a book, published a few years ago, that examined the role that cooking food played in human development.\u00a0 It is called <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Catching_Fire:_How_Cooking_Made_Us_Human\">Catching Fire: How Cooking Made Us Human<\/a>, by Richard Wrangham, an anthropologist at Harvard University.\u00a0 A brief interview with him on this topic can be seen <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Rc6vKrhhXU4\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a fascinating idea, but the concept is also relatively simple: cooking food allowed humans to spend less time foraging for food, chewing food, and digesting food; thus, we were able to spend more time doing other things.\u00a0 Over time, we developed into what we are now, with smaller digestive tracts and bigger brains.<\/p>\n<p>This made me think of the ever-evolving food and nutrition advice coming from everywhere.\u00a0 The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.livingpaleo.com\/the-rising-popularity-of-the-paleo-diet\/\">recent rise in interest with the Paleo Diet<\/a> is especially interesting, and seems to go against this concept in the book.\u00a0 The Paleo Diet <a href=\"http:\/\/thepaleodiet.com\/the-paleo-diet-premise\/\">advocates<\/a> a return to our pre-agricultural hunter-gather roots, at least in terms of eating, and has some characteristics of other diets, such as <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Atkins_diet\">Atkins<\/a>. \u00a0The Paleo Diet specifically lists \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/thepaleodiet.com\/what-to-eat-on-the-paleo-diet\/\">processed foods<\/a>\u201d on the \u201cdon\u2019t eat\u201d list (although there is a rule with the Paleo Diet that allows limited deviation from the hunter-gatherer approach to eating).\u00a0 Processing is many things, and cooking is a form of food processing.<\/p>\n<p>Another idea, new this year in the form of a start-up company, advocates a very different approach.\u00a0 A company called <a href=\"https:\/\/campaign.soylent.me\/soylent-free-your-body\">Soylent<\/a> is producing a dry, purified diet powder that is mixed in water and consumed throughout the day.\u00a0 This concept is a further extension of the cooking-for-human-advancement-theory in that you really don\u2019t have to worry about food at all.\u00a0 Simply mix up your balanced diet powder each day, and take a drink whenever you want.\u00a0 The thinking is that people who sit at a computer all day can continue working for long hours (if they choose to) and have more focus \u2013 no bloating and drowsiness following time-out for a big meal.\u00a0 Indeed, this effect <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fourhourworkweek.com\/blog\/2013\/08\/20\/soylent\/\">has been reported<\/a> when the diet was tried.\u00a0 Also, the thinking is that having well-balanced meal replacers is beneficial for people who don\u2019t eat a well-balanced diet, or for famine relief.<\/p>\n<p>In my opinion, both of these approaches to food and nutrition have some merit, and everyone should try what works for them.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some undeniable truths, however, that you should keep in mind:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Unprocessed food is not on your side.\u00a0 In fact, plants and animals have evolved mechanisms to keep you from wanting to eat them.\u00a0 Some may be obvious (<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pathogenic_bacteria\">pathogenic bacteria<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Food_allergy\">allergens<\/a>), while others maybe not so much (<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Antinutrient\">antinutritional factors<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>There really is no such thing as \u201cgood\u201d or \u201cbad\u201d food.\u00a0 Take, for example, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2010\/HEALTH\/11\/08\/twinkie.diet.professor\/index.html\">the man who lost weight and had better metrics of health eating a lower-calorie, but total junk food diet<\/a>.\u00a0 It\u2019s all in how they were consumed (moderation).\u00a0 Having said that, making a diet plan and sticking to it, to include foods that are avoided, may be a good tactic.<\/li>\n<li>When eating a completely-purified diet, for months or years, you are completely dependent on the manufacturer.\u00a0 If the formulation, ingredient, or processing is incorrect or variable, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nutrient#Deficiencies_and_toxicity\">nutrient toxicities and deficiencies<\/a> could easily develop, and health could be adversely affected.\u00a0 Eating a wide range of foods would make this almost impossible.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In conclusion, it may be useful to consider some middle ground here.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insta-pro.com\/products-services\/extruders.html\">Extruders<\/a> from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insta-pro.com\/\">Insta-Pro<\/a>, which cook ingredients and complete diets for high-temperatures over short-times, work to deactivate the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insta-pro.com\/2012\/11\/06\/how-to-manage-aflatoxin-in-corn-what-are-some-of-the-options\/\">negative components<\/a> in food, while enhancing nutrient quality (see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insta-pro.com\/2013\/09\/10\/all-energy-sources-are-not-created-equal\/\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insta-pro.com\/2013\/08\/06\/of-cook-of-pet-food-aquatic-feed-by-the-ms3000-medium-shear-extruder\/\">here<\/a>).\u00a0 Insta-Pro has long had a line of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insta-pro.com\/products-services\/extruders.html\">high-shear extruders<\/a>, and is introducing a new MS3000\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.insta-pro.com\/products-services\/extruders\/test-medium-shear-extruder\/medium-shear-extruder.html\">Medium Shear Extruder<\/a> for making shaped products, such as fish feed and
