of Soybean Divergence: What Does It Mean?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of the grand narratives you may have noticed on the Insta-Pro blog relates to oilseeds, grains, and their final ingredient forms exhibiting more differentiation than is often assumed \u2013 the idea of decommoditization.\u00a0 Look no further than high-shear dry extruded\/partially-deoiled (our ExPress\u00ae process) soy meal, which we often point out is different from and better than commodity, solvent (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hexane\">hexane<\/a>)-extracted soybean meal.\u00a0 We show these differences using data from animal experiments (see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insta-pro.com\/en\/2017\/05\/18\/properly-processed-express-soy-meal-maintains-high-digestibility-greater-metabolizable-energy\/\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insta-pro.com\/en\/2014\/04\/29\/express-the-genetic-potential-of-your-animals\/\">here<\/a> as examples among many).\u00a0 This is an instance of ingredient variances due to processing and assumes that the raw materials (soybeans) are the same.\u00a0 But, this is often not the case.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve shown that even something as common as corn, a globally-traded \u201ccommodity\u201d, displays enough variation due to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insta-pro.com\/en\/2014\/07\/24\/corn-is-not-a-commodity\/\">changes in moisture levels<\/a> to affect broiler growth performance and efficiency.\u00a0 This says nothing about other natural sources of variation, namely levels of toxins in corn that will derail performance goals (see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insta-pro.com\/en\/2019\/01\/03\/high-shear-dry-extrusion-effectively-reduces-mycotoxin-levels-in-grains\/\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insta-pro.com\/en\/2014\/02\/04\/mycotoxin-contamination-is-widespread-in-feed-ingredients-and-complete-feeds-in-asia\/\">here<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Processed soybean meals are the dominant source of protein for livestock diets around the world.\u00a0 It\u2019s often assumed that differences in terms of raw bean protein content exist, but there is little evidence to back this up.\u00a0 For example, it\u2019s clear that <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/cropdoc2\/status\/503279819631894529\">growing period affects nutrient accumulation in soybeans<\/a>, which is probably one reason why soybeans produced in places with shorter growing seasons tend to have lower protein.<\/p>\n<p>But, what about when effects due to region or weather are minimized?\u00a0 What happens when you grow different kinds of soybeans near each other in the same crop year?<\/p>\n<p>It turns out there are significant differences in nutrient content due to variety.\u00a0 Researchers published a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0308814613019201\">study<\/a> from a few years ago showing that organic and genetically-modified (GMO) soybean varieties, all grown in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Iowa\">State of Iowa<\/a>, are different as shown in the following graph:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-12598 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.insta-pro.com-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Dave-Graph.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"975\" height=\"664\" srcset=\"https:\/\/instapro.spinuhost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Dave-Graph.png 975w, https:\/\/instapro.spinuhost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Dave-Graph-300x204.png 300w, https:\/\/instapro.spinuhost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Dave-Graph-768x523.png 768w, https:\/\/instapro.spinuhost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Dave-Graph-750x511.png 750w, https:\/\/instapro.spinuhost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Dave-Graph-564x384.png 564w, https:\/\/instapro.spinuhost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Dave-Graph-940x640.png 940w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 975px) 100vw, 975px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Organic soybeans, produced under similar agronomic conditions, are in fact more nutrient dense than GMO soybeans.\u00a0 As shown above, raw organic soybeans contain more protein and sugars than raw GMO soybeans.\u00a0 Not shown, but as can be inferred from the protein data above, is that organic soy contains more amino acids like lysine.<\/p>\n<p>And, this is important when you consider that most swine and poultry diets contain some kind of synthetic lysine to maximize growth performance.\u00a0 The more lysine that is available from soy (and the resulting meal) means that less synthetic lysine will be required in a formulation.<\/p>\n<p>You may already see where all of this is ultimately going.\u00a0 Why should we treat soybeans as if they are an identical commodity when this is clearly not the case?\u00a0 Arrange to see a small-to-medium sized <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insta-pro.com\/en\/2013\/03\/26\/visiting-an-oilseed-crushing-planta-valuable-opportunity\/\">ExPress\u00ae soy processing plant<\/a> to capture this inherent value in raw soybean nutrient content. \u00a0There is simply no need to mix all soybeans together at a larger processor where your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insta-pro.com\/en\/2018\/10\/11\/less-moisture-in-ingredients-is-a-good-thing\/\">beans could easily be undervalued<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One
