people and damaged property, stories have emerged of significant crop damage \u2013 in particular, the cotton crop was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2018\/10\/15\/agricultural-damage-from-hurricane-michael-forecast-to-top-1point3-billion.html\">severely damaged<\/a> in some areas.\u00a0 In the Midwestern United States, where most of the corn and soybeans are grown, harvest was characterized as very wet \u2013 videos such as this <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mitchzum\/status\/1051934913421815810\">one<\/a> have emerged and highlight the tough, wet conditions.\u00a0 And, in Canada, farmers had to <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/StormhunterTWN\/status\/1052630549716594688\">battle snow<\/a> as they harvested soybeans.<\/p>\n<p>The problems are only beginning for farmers once the crop is out of the field.\u00a0 Wet crops don\u2019t convey or store well, and moist conditions are a breeding ground for mold and bacteria, both of which can leave behind toxins even when they\u2019re gone.\u00a0 Toxins and optimized animal growth performance don\u2019t go together &#8211; there\u2019s very <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/ps\/article\/91\/11\/2792\/1548244\">clear evidence<\/a> of a linear decline in growth performance with increasing intake of common toxins.\u00a0 Also, feeding cereal grains, like corn; and oilseed meals, like soy and cottonseed meals, with elevated bacterial loads increase the likelihood that they contain pathogens, which could cause illness and reduce performance.<\/p>\n<p>This is at least partly why farmers selling their higher-than-usual damaged beans are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox16.com\/news\/soybeans-damaged_20181007031539\/1503832388\">seeing discounts<\/a> in what the local elevator is willing to pay them.\u00a0 Another reason is simply that wetter grains and oilseeds <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insta-pro.com\/en\/2018\/10\/11\/less-moisture-in-ingredients-is-a-good-thing\/\">require more drying<\/a> for long-term storage.<\/p>\n<p>While there is no magic solution for these raw material conditions, the choice of processing does matter.\u00a0 High shear dry extrusion, in addition to meeting the goals of a thermal process, can be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insta-pro.com\/en\/2015\/05\/07\/avain-influenza-sterilization-through-high-shear-dry-extrusion\/\">sterilizing<\/a> and will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insta-pro.com\/en\/2012\/11\/06\/how-to-manage-aflatoxin-in-corn-what-are-some-of-the-options\/\">reduce toxins<\/a> by roughly 50%.\u00a0 Also, any enzymes that may be part of the natural degradation process, such as lipases that can cause oil to become rancid, will be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insta-pro.com\/en\/2017\/10\/26\/by-products-stabilized-rice-bran\/\">deactivated<\/a>.\u00a0 Along with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insta-pro.com\/en\/2017\/05\/04\/using-dry-extruded-whole-soybeans-extruded-full-fat-in-formulations\/\">partial dehydration<\/a>, high shear dry extrusion acts to stabilize and improve damaged soybeans and grains, as much as possible.\u00a0 We often document here how high shear dry extrusion cooking, combined with mechanical pressing for oil extraction (known as
