{"id":12165,"date":"2018-10-18T04:00:32","date_gmt":"2018-10-18T09:00:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.insta-pro.com\/?p=12165"},"modified":"2026-01-07T13:29:14","modified_gmt":"2026-01-07T19:29:14","slug":"understanding-the-various-types-of-oil-processing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/instapro.spinuhost.com\/en\/blog\/nutritionandtechnologies\/understanding-the-various-types-of-oil-processing\/","title":{"rendered":"Understanding the various types of oil processing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">One benefit of the Insta-Pro ExPress\u00ae process is that you are able to diversify your product offerings.\u00a0 Instead of just offering extruded soybeans, you now have two products to offer: meal and oil.\u00a0 The meal side is usually straight forward in that it is simply sold to the intended market (food, feed, etc.).\u00a0 What about the oil?\u00a0 In some instances, it\u2019s treated as a by-product, but with the right processing, it too can become a highly valuable product stream.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">The oil will need to be processed differently depending on the final intended market.\u00a0 Each market will have its own standards that must be met in order to satisfy the customer.\u00a0 These could be things such as solids content, phosphorus amount (i.e. gums), water amount and others.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Feed Grade Oil<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">The simplest thing to do with the oil is to sell the crude oil produced off of the press for feed grade oil.\u00a0 Typically, the standards that the oil needs to meet are relatively low for this industry.\u00a0 The oil will be used as an energy source for animals, so the processing requirement is low.\u00a0 Some buyers may require a certain solids content, so a simple settling or screening tank will be needed.\u00a0 Higher capacities would benefit from using a decanter.\u00a0 In terms of value, feed grade oil is the lowest value oil.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Degummed Oil<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">The next level above crude, feed grade oil is a crude, degummed oil.\u00a0 There is a global trading standard that most producers will accept.\u00a0 The AOCS (American Oil Chemists\u2019 Society) is an organization that oversees and gives guidance to the required standards.\u00a0 Additionally, it gives suggestions as to any penalties to the value if certain thresholds are not met.\u00a0 By using either an acid or water degumming method, producers will likely be able to produce a globally accepted oil.\u00a0 In practice, a crude, degummed oil is suitable for food use, although in some cases, the color may not be accepted by the market.\u00a0 As expected, the investment costs to implement this are greater than producing a feed grade oil, but the value of crude, degummed oil is higher than feed grade oil.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Full RBD (refined, bleached, deodorized)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">The highest level of oil processing is known as refined, bleached, and deodorized (RBD).\u00a0 This is generally referred to as food grade oil.\u00a0 The oil is degummed, neutralized, deodorized, and bleached.\u00a0 These processes remove gums (phospholipids), odors (those inherent to the oilseed, not necessarily bad), and colors (to make the oil appear more clear).\u00a0 Oftentimes, multiple oils are blended together, hence the requirements to bleach and deodorize.\u00a0 Generic &#8220;vegetable&#8221; oils are a blend of multiple oils.\u00a0 Once again, as more processing is involved, the higher the investment costs, but the oil will also have a greater value.\u00a0 Typically, around 30-40 tons per day of oil is required in order for this system to make financial sense.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">Since each level has certain investment costs and each oil seed will have unique processing requirements,\u00a0 It is important to understand what your market demands.
