complete diets that provide all nutrients in a convenient form for a particular stage of animal development.\u00a0 With pelleted feeds, the main advantage is that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.insta-pro.com\/en\/2017\/10\/19\/evaluating-ingredients-pelleting-vs-mash-in-poultry-diets-part-4\/\">feed efficiency is often improved<\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> \u2013 provided that high-quality ingredients, like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.insta-pro.com\/en\/2017\/05\/18\/properly-processed-express-soy-meal-maintains-high-digestibility-greater-metabolizable-energy\/\">dry extruded soy meals<\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">, are used to make the pellets.\u00a0 Pellet mills <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.insta-pro.com\/en\/2017\/10\/19\/evaluating-ingredients-pelleting-vs-mash-in-poultry-diets-part-4\/\">don\u2019t do any cooking<\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> to speak of.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">That is why we\u2019ve promoted in our blogs and elsewhere, our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.insta-pro.com\/en\/2013\/08\/20\/preserve-your-nutrients-dont-bake-your-product-to-dry-it\/\">medium shear extruder (MS3000)<\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> as the right tool for both cooking and shaping feeds and pet foods.\u00a0 In addition to conveniently providing all nutrients for optimal performance, this introduces another dimension \u2013 the shape of the product \u2013 which goes beyond the particle size of meals or flours.\u00a0 Particle size is important because it can affect digestibility and availability of nutrients in any ingredient or diet, but it\u2019s somewhat of an old issue.\u00a0 The shape of a feed or ingredient, and how this affects nutrient delivery, is an important new factor worth exploring.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This is particularly important for ruminants, like dairy cattle, that can consume a wide range of shapes and sizes.\u00a0 Indeed, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hayandforage.com\/article-1664-forage-particle-length-is-longer-really-better-.html\">forage particle length<\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> is an important characteristic of silages and hay, and it can vary widely if not properly controlled.\u00a0 Everything consumed by a ruminant spends at least some time in the rumen, a microbial fermentation vat.\u00a0 How might dry extruded, shaped ingredients work in the rumen?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">We\u2019ve been promoting our new high shear, dry extruder 2000-CG, which is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.insta-pro.com\/en\/2017\/11\/02\/optimizing-your-corn-extrusion-process\/\">designed to extrude high-starch ingredients<\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">, among others.\u00a0 Recently, we were able to attach dies and a cutterhead to the end of the barrel, and make round \u201cdisk\u201d shapes through work in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.insta-pro.com\/en\/2018\/08\/02\/the-hanson-said-research-development-center-is-open-for-business\/\">Hanson &amp; Said R&amp;D Center<\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">.\u00a0 Combined with the highly-gelatinized and rumen-fermentable nature of starch in our dry extruded corn, the shape adds yet another level of control, while increasing the bulk density.\u00a0 \u201cDisks\u201d of extruded corn should spend more time in the rumen and allow even more rumen microbial protein to be made from the starch \u2013 an important way to boost dairy production.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">And, what else could you deliver to the animal this way?\u00a0 What other beneficial nutrients could you extrude into the corn as it\u2019s
