As a supplier of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insta-pro.com\/en\/2017\/05\/04\/using-dry-extruded-whole-soybeans-extruded-full-fat-in-formulations\/\">high-shear dry extruded, full fat soy<\/a> and\/or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insta-pro.com\/en\/2017\/05\/18\/properly-processed-express-soy-meal-maintains-high-digestibility-greater-metabolizable-energy\/\">ExPress\u00ae soy meal<\/a>, Do you have a strong dairy feed market near you (and do you want to buy a pellet mill for the hulls, more on this later)?<\/p>\n<p>If the answer to these two questions is \u201cno\u201d, then I recommend to <strong><u>not<\/u><\/strong> dehull your soybeans before dry extrusion and mechanical oil pressing.\u00a0 In general, leave the hulls on.\u00a0 Let me explain.<\/p>\n<p>First, it is true that dehulling will lower the amount of crude fiber in the meal, and will increase the crude protein content.\u00a0 Typically, the amount of crude fiber is reduced 1.5-2% units, while crude protein is increased by the same amount.<\/p>\n<p>However, when you do this, every day about 6-8% of the total weight of your incoming soybeans is now being diverted to a lower-value co-product.\u00a0 Soy hulls are worth roughly one-third as much as meal.\u00a0 So, be sure to do the math \u2013 how much of a lower-value ingredient do you now have to move?<\/p>\n<p>Also, soy hulls have a very low bulk density (i.e., are very light).\u00a0 This means potential difficulty conveying them around, and loading them onto a truck or rail car.\u00a0 It\u2019s important to understand how much <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insta-pro.com\/en\/2014\/10\/30\/how-much-quality-nutrition-are-you-paying-to-ship\/\">quality nutrition you\u2019re hauling around<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This is where the pellet mill comes in. Often, in order to get around the light bulk density of soy hulls, feed mills will install a pellet mill.\u00a0 Pelleted soy hulls have a much higher bulk density.\u00a0 Do you want to install a pellet mill to deal with your soy hulls?<\/p>\n<p>Lastly, the only good, consistent market for soy hulls is dairy.\u00a0 It is related to the hemicelluloses (type of fiber) in soy hulls that work well in the rumen, making the fermentation process enhanced for the cow.\u00a0 So, most dairy nutritionists will include soy hulls in a formulation, but in my experience, this is typically around 5% of the dry matter, which is a somewhat low inclusion level.<\/p>\n<p>But, with all this being said, aren\u2019t high-shear dry extruded soy meals better without the hulls?\u00a0 In a word, \u201cno\u201d.\u00a0 As we\u2019ve documented before, ExPress\u00ae soy meal with the hulls <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insta-pro.com\/en\/2016\/01\/21\/do-i-have-to-dehull-soybeans-prior-to-extrusion\/\">is digested the same<\/a> as dehulled meal.\u00a0 And, while it\u2019s true that the crude protein level will be slightly lower with the hulls, it\u2019s important to remember that there are many types of soy meal \u2013 ExPress\u00ae meal and high-shear dry extruded, full-fat soy have residual oil in the meal (an excellent source of energy) and higher amino acid digestibilities versus commodity solvent-extracted soybean meal (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.insta-pro.com\/en\/2017\/05\/18\/properly-processed-express-soy-meal-maintains-high-digestibility-greater-metabolizable-energy\/\">here<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insta-pro.com\/en\/2017\/05\/04\/using-dry-extruded-whole-soybeans-extruded-full-fat-in-formulations\/\">here<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insta-pro.com\/en\/2014\/04\/29\/express-the-genetic-potential-of-your-animals\/\">here<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insta-pro.com\/en\/2014\/05\/06\/quality-ingredients-a-consistent-source-of-highly-digestible-nutrients\/\">here<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>In most cases, it pays to leave the hulls on raw soybeans before high-shear dry extrusion and mechanical oil pressing.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This is an unending topic for us \u2013 should I dehull my soybeans before high-shear dry extrusion and mechanical oil pressing?\u00a0 We\u2019ve covered it before on our blog (here, here, and here).
