From discussing how dietary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insta-pro.com\/en\/2017\/08\/24\/evaluating-ingredients-effect-of-crude-fiber-in-poultry-part-1\/\">fiber<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insta-pro.com\/en\/2017\/09\/21\/evaluating-ingredients-effect-of-dietary-fat-content-in-poultry-part-2\/\">fat<\/a> levels affect energy in poultry diets, as well as determining how <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insta-pro.com\/en\/2017\/10\/19\/evaluating-ingredients-pelleting-vs-mash-in-poultry-diets-part-4\/\">feed form<\/a> (pellet vs. mash) plays a role, and how the measurements and estimates of energy in each ingredient have to be as accurate as possible. When you want to design a formulation or feeding program, the amount of energy in the diet is always a major concern.<\/p>\n<p>Recently, I wrote a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insta-pro.com\/en\/2013\/06\/18\/energy-in-performance-out\/\">blog<\/a> with data on required energy in dairy diets (click on the bar graph within the blog) and how important it is to maintain high levels of milk production, to see my point. In short, if you don\u2019t get the energy right, performance will suffer.<\/p>\n<p>While it\u2019s a challenge for all types of animal production, dairy producers have an especially difficult time due to inherent variabilities within the ingredients they use and the complexities of cattle physiology. In addition, many energy systems are used &#8211; some proprietary to companies trying to sell them products.<\/p>\n<p>Two of the more common energy systems for dairy are total digestible nutrients (TDN) and net energy of lactation (NE<sub>L<\/sub>), both of which can be read about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.extension.umn.edu\/agriculture\/dairy\/feed-and-nutrition\/feeding-the-dairy-herd\/feed-nutrients.html\">here<\/a>. Note that TDN has been around longer, while NE<sub>L <\/sub>is a more detailed and challenging measurement. NE<sub>L <\/sub>can be estimated from TDN, so if someone gives you one of these values, you should question how it was derived.<\/p>\n<p>We can use some data from a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/12741562\">research project<\/a>, designed to change the formulation in order to affect milk production, to compare these methods of energy determination.<\/p>\n<p>First off, the researchers altered the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Neutral_Detergent_Fiber\">NDF<\/a> (structural fiber) percentage in various formulations, and this affected milk production in a linear manner:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-10610 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.insta-pro.com-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/part6-graph-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/instapro.spinuhost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/part6-graph-1.png 800w, https:\/\/instapro.spinuhost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/part6-graph-1-300x188.png 300w, https:\/\/instapro.spinuhost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/part6-graph-1-768x480.png 768w, https:\/\/instapro.spinuhost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/part6-graph-1-750x469.png 750w, https:\/\/instapro.spinuhost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/part6-graph-1-564x353.png 564w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>So, with these different formulations, how did TDN and NE<sub>L<\/sub> change?<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-10614 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.insta-pro.com-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/part6-graph-2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/instapro.spinuhost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/part6-graph-2.png 800w, https:\/\/instapro.spinuhost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/part6-graph-2-300x188.png 300w, https:\/\/instapro.spinuhost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/part6-graph-2-768x480.png 768w, https:\/\/instapro.spinuhost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/part6-graph-2-750x469.png 750w, https:\/\/instapro.spinuhost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/part6-graph-2-564x353.png 564w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-10618 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.insta-pro.com-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/part6-graph-3.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/instapro.spinuhost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/part6-graph-3.png 800w, https:\/\/instapro.spinuhost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/part6-graph-3-300x188.png 300w, https:\/\/instapro.spinuhost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/part6-graph-3-768x480.png 768w, https:\/\/instapro.spinuhost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/part6-graph-3-750x469.png 750w, https:\/\/instapro.spinuhost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/part6-graph-3-564x353.png 564w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In this case, NE<sub>L <\/sub>is a better predictor of milk production than TDN. However, TDN is better than having nothing at all. In other situations, these relationships will be a little different.\u00a0 Overall, this points to the importance of choosing quality ingredients for dairy rations. This will help alleviate uncertainties associated with dairy formulations.<\/p>\n<p>Extruded soy, both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insta-pro.com\/en\/2017\/05\/04\/using-dry-extruded-whole-soybeans-extruded-full-fat-in-formulations\/\">full-fat<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insta-pro.com\/en\/2017\/05\/18\/properly-processed-express-soy-meal-maintains-high-digestibility-greater-metabolizable-energy\/\">partially-defatted<\/a>, is well researched, controllable, and proven to provide energy in formulations for high-performing dairy herds.
